The Evolution of Security Industry Terminology

Updated: Jul 18

The security industry is evolving, not just in practice but also in language. In the UK, there is a movement to retire the term “bouncer” due to its perceived “macho” connotations, reinforcing the professionalism of modern security personnel.

The head of the Security Industry Authority (SIA), has highlighted this shift as part of a broader effort to create a more inclusive industry. With only around 11% of the 450,000 licensed security professionals in the UK being women, there is a clear opportunity to encourage greater diversity. This initiative also aligns with wider strategies to reduce violence against women and ensure safer public spaces for all.

At Akon Security Services Ltd, we recognise the importance of professionalism and inclusivity in our industry. Through our in-house training company, OnnPoint Training & Consultancy Services Ltd we ensure that the next generation of SIA-trained Door Supervisors are not only qualified but trained the right way, equipped with the skills, knowledge, and mindset to maintain high standards of safety and customer service.

As the conversation around terminology and representation progresses, we look forward to playing our part in shaping the future of security.
