ACID ATTACKS: How your immediate aid can drastically improve the chances for the victim

In light of recent events and the increasing frequency of acid attacks, the importance of awareness and training has never been greater. Whilst being present or involved in an acid attack is no one’s wish, being properly prepared to assist any victims could dramatically reduce the damage done to any victim.

What can you do to help if you encounter the after effects of an attack?

The short answer… WATER- as much as possible and as quickly as possible. A standard 500ml water bottle will not cut it- experts claim that 40 to 60 litres of fresh or saline water should be doused on each victim. If you witness an attack, run to the nearest venue or house, ask for as much water as possible, raise the alarm and ask for a call be placed to emergency services immediately. Recruit more help if possible and start to douse the victims burns. Stop Acid Attack released the following detailed instructions for the washing process:

 

1      Immediately wash affected body part of patient with plenty of fresh or saline water.

2      Do not rinse the burn area with dirty water at it can cause severe infection.

3      Keep flushing the affected burn area with plenty of cool water until the patient’s burning sensation starts fading. It may take 30-45 minutes.

4      Remove all the jewelry or clothing which had contact with acid.

5      Don’t apply any kind of cream or ointment on the affected area as it may slow the treatment procedure by doctors.

6      Rush the patient to a burn specialty hospital

 

Police have recorded 400 acid attacks in six months.
